How to make Gluten Free French Toast

Gluten Free French Toast is not much different from regular French Toast, but involves swapping out some ingredients for gluten free and dairy free alternatives. This recipe sticks to the basic and traditional way to make french toast and is made with free-range eggs, almond nut milk, and a gluten free Vienna loaf. You can really use any gluten free bread, just make sure you have super thick slices to soak up lots of that milky custard before cooking.

We’ve served this gorgeous recipe with fresh antioxidant-rich berries and natural unflavoured yoghurt. Many enjoy it served simply with dairy free butter and maple syrup. And for those with more of a savoury tooth, check out our notes where you can make it without the sweet flavours, and serve it with bacon, sausage or keep it vegetarian.

This recipe is a fantastic breakfast and also makes for a great snack. And with it only taking 20 minutes tops (15 if you’re speedy) it’s a great choice for a quick meal.

Sweet or Savoury?

Why not try both?! Growing up I always ate it savoury. Mum would make it when she made Schnitzel because there was always leftover egg mix. She’d dip some extra bread into the egg and cook it in the same pan as the schnitzel, giving the bread the meaty taste which we loved. Years later, we’ve been making it both sweet and savoury because they’re both so good.

Which bread is best for this recipe? Traditionally a nice sweet brioche is used. It’s a sweeter bread that is also very aerated, allowing the custardy milk to soak in well. But getting gluten free brioche can be challenging. So we recommend finding an unsliced Vienna loaf or similar white bread and cutting it yourself into thick slices to suit.

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp cinnamon powder
  • 1 gluten-free Vienna loaf (or other gluten-free bread)
  • 1 Tbs dairy-free margarine
  • 2 Tbs light vegetable oil
  • 400g mixed fresh berries

Notes

You can make a savoury version! Replace the cinnamon and vanilla with salt and pepper, and add your favourite spice mix. Then cook in the same method and serve with your choice of crispy bacon, smoked salmon or pan-fried vegetables such as spinach and onions.
